STICKS/BRANCHES – FREE CROCHET PATTERN

If, like me, you have no trees in your garden and a friend offers you some free sticks/branches, you take them! There is always something fun to be made. I was gifted three lovely sticks/branches by my friends Chloe & Hannah, as they were clearing their new garden, and here is what I did with them.

Hanging Storage

First one of the lovely free sticks came to a really good practical use. This hanging storage unit is from our old flat, where it used to hang off some Ikea Stolmen poles (amazing things). Now it hangs off the picture rail in our entrance landing. Its perfect for all those handy things one might want to grab when running out the door like tissues, sun block, shopping bags and such.

Bumblebee Mobile

The second stick got turned into this bumblebee mobile for my sons room. The pattern is from ‘Modern baby crochet’ by Stacey Trock, though I wasn’t as thorough with using all the materials recommended. Hopefully it won’t fall into pieces too soon. I painted the stick with some leftover chalk paint and as I didn’t have any fishing line I used 100% linen thread; that stuff is pretty strong.

The Hanging Branch

The last stick, or small branch, took quite a while to finish, but I finally hung it on our bedroom ceiling. It looks menacing looming over me at night but oh so pretty in the morning light.

Yarn used was Drops Muscat cotton in different colours with a 3.5mm hook

All the colour patches were measured as I went along. I started with a random number of chains and then crocheted rows of dc (double crochet, the UK kind, sc in America) until the length wrapped around a specific part of the branch. I always left a generous tail on each piece for sewing.

Flowers and leaves were crocheted as follows:

Small flower 🌸

Make a magic loop

Round 1. (ch2, 3tr, ch2, ss into the loop) five times.

Cast off and weave in one of the two tails. Remember to leave one long tail for sewing.

Big flower 🌸

Make a magic loop

Round 1. (ch3, 3dtr, ch3, ss into the loop) five times.

Cast off and weave in one of the two tails. Remember to leave one long tail for sewing.

Small Leaf (5cm/2”)

Leave a long tail at the start for sewing.

ch8

ss in 2nd ch from the hook, dc, htr, 2htr, htr, dc, ss in the last st

now work the following on the other side of the ch-8:

ch1, ss in the 1st ch, dc, htr, 2htr, htr, dc, ss in the next stitch and ss in the 1st of the beg of the round on the other side of ch-8 (the tip of the leaf)

Medium Leaf (6cm/2 1/4”)

Leave a long tail at the start for sewing.

ch10

dc into 2nd ch from the hook, htr, tr, 2tr, tr, htr, dc, ss into the last st

now work the following on the other side of the ch-10:

ch1, ss in the 1st ch, dc, htr, tr, 2tr, tr, htr, dc, ss in the next stitch and ss in the 1st st of the beg of the round on the other side of ch-10 (the tip of the leaf)

Large Leaf (7.5cm/3”)

Leave a long tail at the start for sewing

ss in the 2nd ch from the hook, dc, htr, tr, (tr & dtr), 2dtr, (dtr & tr), tr, htr, dc, ss in the last st

now work the following on the other side of the ch-8:

ch1, ss in the first ch, dc, htr, tr, (tr & dtr), 2dtr, (dtr & tr), tr, htr, dc, ss in the next st and ss in the 1st st of the beg of the round on the other side of ch-8 (the tip of the leaf)
