SANTA HAT – FREE PATTERN

We are a family of big heads. πŸ˜‹ We cannot work with the “one size” stuff you get in most shops and often we can’t even fit in the biggest sizes either. So making hats is almost an essential part of survival for this household. The kid is still fine as his toddler head does fit into the small adult sizes for now, but I couldn’t even bother looking for an adult Santa hat for the Beard Face. Better just make one myself.

So here’s a free pattern for a huge santa hat.  It should fit a 60-65cm head πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸŽ…πŸΌ

Tools:

4mm/G6 crochet hook
Scissors
Darning needle
Pom Pom Maker (optional)

Materials

I used Karisma Wine red (3 balls = 150 grams) and Off White (1 ball = 50 grams), but any dk/8 ply yarn will work.

Note. Every round will begin with a ch-2 (does not count as a stitch) and end with a ss to the top of beginning tr to close the round.

This pattern is written in UK terms. For US terms please see the conversions table below.

Instructions:

Start by making a magic loop

Round 1. Ch2, 6tr in the magic loop, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (6 sts)
Round 2. Ch2, 2tr in each st, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (12 sts)
Round 3. Ch2, [1tr in next st, 2tr in next st] 6 times, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (18 sts)
Round 4. Ch2, [1tr in next 2 sts, 2tr] 6 times, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (24 sts)

Continue increasing 6 stitches evenly on every round.
The number of β€˜1tr/per stitch’ before β€˜2tr/per stitch’ will grow by one on each round.
Eg. Round 5. = [1tr in next 3 sts, 2tr]. (30 sts) And so on.

Round 6. (36 sts)
Round 7. (42 sts)
Round 8. (48 sts)

Round 9. Ch2, 1 tr in each sts, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (48 sts)

Now increase 6 stitches evenly on every other round only.

Eg. Round 10. = [1 tr in next 7 sts, 2tr] (54 sts)
Round 11. 1 tr in each st (54 sts)

Round 12. (60 sts)
Round 14. (66 sts)
Round 16. (72 sts)
Round 18. (78 sts)
Round 20. (84 sts)
Round 22. (90 sts)
Round 24. (96 sts)

Rounds 25 – 32. Ch2, 1tr in each st, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (96 sts)

Change to white yarn.

Rounds 33-34. Ch2, 1 tr in each st, ss to top of beg tr to close the round. (96 sts)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

I think the hat works well without a pom-pom, but if you want one they’re easy to make with a pom-pom maker (I have a prym one). Youtube also seems to be full of different techniques. πŸ˜„πŸ‘
